I've just rejoined an endgame guild (my Hunter just recently hit 70), and while I used to run Heroics pretty often on my Shaman with my old guild, my new guild is much smaller -- while I like them a lot, they aren't as much into running instances as I am, so endgame instance runs are few and far between with them.
So I'm left to PuG Heroics on my own, and I'm having the same problem deviate_delight is: getting into PuG Heroic groups isn't proving to be easy. I'm a good player, and my gear is pretty good (OK, to be truthful, it's probably a little low, and I just need to keep running non-Heroic stuff a little more until I get luckier with loot drops), but for some reason, I'm having a tough time making my way into Heroic groups.
So let's put the question out to you readers: any advice for players like me and d_d on how to start Heroic dungeons without guildies to run with? Anyone have a strategy for getting a good, regular Heroic group together, or how to make it so that Heroic runners seek you out when they need a DPS (or tank or healer or whatever you are)? Heroics are great places, full of good loot and badges and all kinds of things that can help immensely with the endgame, but with the wrong people, they can really ruin your day. How can we get a group that works?
It's not an iPhone Armory app, but Blizzard did release some official content for your mobile phones. They've set up a mobile.blizzard.com site, at which you can buy wallpapers and ringtones from WoW and the other Blizz franchises. At this point, you're probably asking yourself one question: can I get a murloc gurgle ringtone? The answer, thankfully, is yes. Yes you can. (Though I can't guarantee it's a good idea.)
There is a big catch: the ringtones are priced at $2.99 each. Yikes. I know ringtones are big business, and I know Blizz is all about the tie-ins, but this is foolishness. Who would pay this over recording an MP3 and sending it to their phone? The wallpapers are $1.99, which is equally dumb for something I could just as easily screenshot off Blizz's concept art pages and email to my phone. Also I can't find the USA or Canada on the list of countries; it seems, at least at the moment, that these are not available here.
It's a shame that these are so oddly expensive, and that they're not even available in the US, because some of them are pretty well-done. It would be awesome to play the WoW intro theme when my guildies text me to go raid. I guess I'll just have to make my own ringtone for it.
Videogame Price Charts (who?) has compiled a list of seven videogame conventions to attend before you die. Unfortunately, the list seems unattainable by design, as they want you to attend E3 before 2007, but besides last week's Leipzig Games Convention and this weekend's upcoming PAX, Blizzard's own BlizzCon is right there on the list.
We're not sure why you'd want to go to BlizzCon if you didn't happen to be a fan of Blizzard's games, but then again, who isn't a fan? They list the legendary costume contest and the chance to try out PC games as reasons to go (along with meeting your guild -- I did all three at BlizzCon last year), though they forget all of the great Blizzard panels and the entertainment offered at each 'Con (where else can you see Level 70 ETC, besides, you know, in-game).
Especially since it's going to be bigger than ever this year, there's no question that BlizzCon is going to be awesome. And even if you weren't able to grab a ticket (we're hearing just now that lottery winners are being notified), we'll have everything you need to know and see from Anaheim this October right here on WoW Insider.

Well, there’s a lot to be done. But one of the key features of lotro is its intricate quest system and delicately woven story. This guide will help you become familiar with both.
The Story of lotro Story? What story?
If you’re one of the millions who have read the books or seen the movies, The Lord of the Rings has a deep and intricate timeline that follows the trials and hardships of many different characters in the fight against the Dark Lord Sauron. There’s plenty of info on the lore of Lord of the Rings to be found at the Encyclopedia of Arda.
How is that handled in the game though?
Through the use of quests and cinematic events, the story crafted by the Turbine and numerous Tolkien Experts will be played out by you, the player. lotro gold
Okay, so where does my character fit in?
As a dwarf, elf, hobbit, or human, you are one of the many free people of Middle-Earth. Your character’s path does not follow in the footsteps of the books’ characters, but rather down a different path that was only oft alluded to in JRR Tolkien’s notes and appendices. Without spoiling much of what you’ll see in lotro, there is a mounting dark force on the rise in Angmar, and it is up to you and the friends you make in the game to thwart it.
I’m familiar with the books, but when does my character begin his “life”?
Well, that all depends on your race. As an elf, your very first steps will be taken centuries before the Fellowship from the books is formed, and as a dwarf you’ll begin just before The Hobbit’s events take place. The cinematics of each race’s beginning quests will bring you up to date, along with the men and hobbits, just as Frodo and Sam are leaving the Shire. Questing in Middle-Earth
Okay, so I get the story bit, but how does lotro’s quest system work?
As you travel throughout Middle-Earth, you’ll meet many a varied Non-Player Characters (NPC), all of them ready to give you tasks to complete. These tasks are called quests, and NPCs that have one for you to undertake will be denoted by a golden ring above their head. Also, you’ll see nearby quest-givers on your Mini-Map, also denoted by a golden ring. lotro goldYou’ll receive your 1st quest very early in the game, and thousands more as you continue on.
Why do I care about quests? Can’t I just go around and kill things, or make stuff?
Sure you can, but you’d be missing out on a lot of the content that’s been put into the game. Not to mention some of the best rewards (both money and items) are given out when completing a quest. Also, you’ll find gaining a level to be a lot more friendly if you help out the NPCs with their numerous tasks.
I have a quest, but I forgot what to do. How do I check what needs done?
For just such a situation, you have your Quest Journal (default key = “L”). Pressing L will bring up the Quest Journal, and it’s here that you’ll be able to keep track of all of your current tasks, as well as ones that you’ve completed over the course of your character’s life.
Each quest is color coded according to the difficulty it will be for your character’s level. Gray is the easiest, then comes green, then light blue and blue. lotro gold White is even with your character’s level, yellow is slightly above, and orange, red, and purple are considerably above your current level.
You said something a bit back about rewards? And money too? Do tell!
Yes, you heard me right. Some of the best items and a lot of money are there for the taking, if a player is dutiful enough to complete some of the quests. Aside from using the Quest Journal to figure out what needs done, you can also see what rewards will be given upon a quest’s completion.
Is there anyway to keep track of them without having the Journal open?
Of course there is! When you highlight a quest, the menu down at the bottom of the Journal gives you several options. “Add to tracker” will make that particular quest’s objectives show up on your main screen off to the right on the “Quest Tracker”.
What do these little symbols by the name of the quest mean?
Those symbols indicate different types of quests in lotro. The symbol that looks like a bunch of people means that the quest will likely require a Fellowship (group of players) in order to be completed. The golden ring means that the quest is an “Epic” quest, while having both on the same quest means that it is an Epic quest which will likely require a Fellowship to complete.

To run this game at maximum graphic performance, it can be quite demanding. I run mine on a top of the line Athlon with 3 gigs of RAM and still dont' turn all the graphic settings up. I always prefer game-play vs. perfect graphics, so it'll be up to you to decide what's most important. There are pre-set settings you can choose from, spanning "poor" to "ultra" so mess with them and find your best combo of performance and looks.
Make an Account
So you've installed the game but need to log in, and choose a server. The first thing you need as an account from Turbine that will allow you to play the game. You should recieve a "key" with your game and you will use this during sign up to enable your account. After you've created a custom username and password, you'll get a chance to log into your account in the game. Select a server from the list provided before entering, but remember to select the same server that your friends are on if you want to play with them. Each server is a completely seperate realm.
Choosing a Class
There are a lot of questions you can ask while you decide on a class. If you're playing with friends, you may want to consider what the most "needed" class is for your kinship. If it's simply personal preference, you can take a brief look at our race and class overviews and then decide based on the features you like most. After you select a character, you'll need to complete an opening quest to enter the "real world" - which we'll explain below.
Intro Quests
No matter what race or class you choose, you'll need to complete an "intro" quest and "intro" quest chain. The game begins in different places based on race, but you'll always have a quest to complete right away. This is a great way to become familiar with game-play and take a look at some of the neat game features. Once you complete your initial quest, you'll be taken to a "starting" or "noob" zone where you will complete quests until about level 5 or 6. Then you'll be moved to the "real world" and be able to talk with friends, etc who are past the intro quests.

The game is the first massively-multiplayer online (MMO) game based on J.R.R. Tolkien’s popular trilogy set in the mythical realm Middle-earth.
“The release of “The Lord of the Rings Online” marks a momentous occasion for MMO gamers and Tolkien fans around the world,” said Jeff Anderson, president and CEO of Turbine. “Countless adventures await gamers eager to experience Middle-earth in an entirely new way and we’re confident that once they’ve visited this epic world, they’ll never want to leave.”
The game, in development for more than four years, lets LoTR fans experience the perils and adventures of Middle-earth as an interactive experience brimming with life and filled with the familiar people, places and monsters from the much-loved fantasy novels, Turbine said.
Beta-tested by roughly 1 million gamers, “lotro” has been hotly anticipated by Tolkien fans, Rob Enderle, principal analyst at Enderle Group, told TechNewsWorld. He expects the release to be tremendous.
“Anticipation for this game was huge,” he said. “However, among those already in games like ‘World of Warcraft,’ there didn’t appear to be as much buzz.”
The game, Enderle explained, stays very close to Tolkien’s vision, and the graphics are not only stunning, but very consistent. While Electronic Arts (Nasdaq: ERTS) owns the rights to LoTR film-based games, Turbine has successfully crafted the game based on completely new adventures.
When you arrive in Archet you’ll find yourself standing in front of Mundo Sackville-Baggins. Talk to him and he will give you a quest called Intro: Amdir’s Request which requires you to speak with Amdir. (Note: The Ring icon signifies that this quest is a part of the epic story arc.)
To find Amdir, run towards the south. After just a few seconds you will see him sitting against a post. Talk to Amdir to finish Mundo’s quest and he will give you another quest called Intro: Captain Brackenbrook. This quest asks you to go to The Mad Badger and talk to Captain Brackenbrook.
The Mad Badger can be found if you turn to the south and go through the door on top of the staircase facing the east. Run up the hallway until you find Captain Brackenbrook. Talk to him to continue the quest which needs you to return to talk to Amdir. Go back and talk to him to finish the quest. You will then be given another quest called Intro: Honing Your Skills for which you need to visit your Trainer and train the skills available to you.
To find the Trainers, turn towards the south and run past The Mad Badger. Then you must turn to the west and run until you see several people in front of a building. These people are the Trainers. Your trainer will have a symbol over his head. Talk to him to train your skills, both Active and Passive. When you’ve trained them all, put the ones you want in your Quickslot at the bottom of the screen. Finally, talk to him again to continue the quest and return to Amdir.
Talk to Amdir again to finish the quest. Then you will be given another quest called Intro: Seeing to the Defense which asks you to talk to Dirk Mudbrick. When you accept the quest Celandine Brandybuck, the Hobbit standing next to Amdir, will have a quest for you. Talk to her and she will give you a quest called Intro: Remedy of the Old Kings. For this quest, you need to collect four Kingsfoil Leaves.
